Military service in Turkey is one of the obligatory duties for foreigners with Turkish citizenship, as it is for every Turkish citizen. Article 2 of the Turkish Military Service Law No. 1111 is as follows:
“Foreigners and refugees who hold Turkish citizenship and those who are legally displaced are classified according to the age at which they acquire Turkish citizenship. They should perform their military service in a similar way to soldiers and Turkish officers of the same age.”
The age limit for military service in Turkey is 21. Those aged 21 are called up for military service that year, the first group is called in at the beginning of February each year, and anyone who turns 21 enters service.
However, foreigners whose origins are from a different country and who become citizens of the Republic of Turkey after the age of 22 are exempt from military service. If you enter Turkey at the age of 20 and become a Turkish citizen at the age of 30, you have to do your military service because you entered Turkey before the age of 22.
Are foreigners who do military service in their country exempted from military service in Turkey?
Only foreigners who are citizens of the specified countries can be exempted if they present a document proving their military service.
These countries consist of people of Turkish origin living in Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyz Autonomous Republic, Tatarstan, Tatar Autonomous Region, East Turkestan – Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, Bashkortostan Autonomous Republic and Bulgaria, Western Thrace or Ahıska.
Is it possible to postpone military service in Turkey?
Military service may be postponed in the following cases:
- Until people with chronic diseases recover,
- Until the prisoners finish their sentence,
- Unless high school students turn 22, vocational school students turn 25, and university students turn 28 until they complete their education and graduate,
- Researchers or professional athletes in the training process can postpone their military service until the age of 35.
What is military service with payment?
It is possible to be exempted from military service in Turkey or benefit from military service in return for a price determined or determined, provided that certain conditions are met. The value of the military exemption fee has recently been determined as 31,000 Turkish liras. 15,000 TL of this amount can be deposited in advance.
The remaining amount can be paid in equal installments within 6 months from the first installment date. The value of the paid military service fee may change every year, and the relevant changes are published in the Official Gazette with the decision of the Ministry of Defense and distributed to all units.
