History of Başakşehir
The production facility called Azatlı Gunpowder Factory was established in Başakşehir to meet the army’s gunpowder requirement during the Ottoman period. For this reason, the region was known as Azatlık for a long time. There is also Yarimburgaz Cave, which has a historical feature in the district and is also the first known settlement in Istanbul.
Since archaeological findings are belonging to human societies of prehistoric times in this cave, the region is of great historical importance. At the same time, traces of the first agricultural community activities in the region were found. In the Roman period, the inlaid gravestones found near the region indicate that the region was an important location. During the Ottoman period, a compound known as İkitelli village was established in the region.
According to historical sources, people living here made a living with activities such as farming and animal husbandry. Another important settlement in the region during this period is known as Şamlar Village. In the Republican period, within the scope of the exchange policies, Turkish people from the Balkans were sent to the Greek population countries in the region and settled in Başakşehir. The region became a district following the decision taken by the Ministry of Interior in 2008.
